Tuesday Tip #6 – Architecture in Helsinki
When you ask people to name an Australian band (current ones, INXS and AC/DC do not count), many struggle to name any. Having lived in Australia and sampled the musical delights it has to offer, I am always amazed at how little Australian music has transferred over to the UK. Architecture in Helsinki are a prime example of what a great band can be, and why Australian bands need more recognition.

Hailing from Melbourne, and formed in 2000, the band have changed and evolved over the years with multiple members and line ups. The one thing that has always remained consistent, however, is their amazing music.
Keeping their sound jammed full of synths and handclaps, the band deliver songs unlike anything the listener would have ever heard before. From earlier songs such as Do The Whirlwind, to more recent songs such as Contact High, the band deliver perfect pop songs.
I love this band for a number of reasons. Firstly, they do not care what people think about them. I always think this is very important as when a band, or a member of a band, takes themselves too seriously you end up with Bono Syndrome, and nobody wants that. Their freedom in their music allows them to create beats and sounds unlike others, and they have been able to successfully develop their’s without losing fans. Secondly, they make amazingly weird videos. They put a lot of time and effort into planning and creating a video to match the sound of the band.
The band are currently touring the UK, so if you like what you hear go and check them out. Their live shows are just as quirky as their songs and videos so you won’t be disappointed. So remember boys and girls, Australian bands need love too, so make sure to pay them some, and spread the word..

Yeah, I saw them in Melbourne and they were great. I feel a lot of good Australian bands are ignored, bar say Temper Trap. The country has a great music scene but for some reason it just doesn’t translate over here. I make a point of reading the ARIA chart to see what’s going on in the charts Down Under. I recommend everyone to do it!
I saw Architecture in Helsinki quite a few years ago supporting The Duke Spirit and I was very impressed with what I saw and heard. I am somewhat surprised at the lack of recognition that they have received over here as they are a great band and deserving of success.
